CoTESOL Awards and Scholarships

Nominations/applications are sought for awards to be presented each year in the fall. 

An awards committee composed of members of the Executive Board meets annually in October to evaluate nominations.

Consider nominating your colleagues for the following awards. Nominations are due by October 1, 2024.

In addition, the CoTESOL Board recognizes one presentation at the annual Fall Convention as the "Best of CoTESOL" based on attendee feedback.


THE VIRGINIA FRENCH ALLEN AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING



Purpose: To honor a teacher who has excelled in classroom instruction and/or has demonstrated creativity in developing materials or a program of instruction.
Who is eligible: Any member of CoTESOL who you consider meets the purpose. (Board members are not eligible.)
Criteria: The material submitted will be examined for evidence of each nominee's adjustment to his/her teaching situation and students, and ability to motivate, encourage, and engage students in challenging and productive learning. Involvement in the community and with colleagues, and continued professional involvement, will also be considered.
Nomination process: The nominator should click on the nomination form and answer the following questions:
1.Write the nominee’s biographical sketch and professional background.
2.Describe what you have observed from the nominee’s teaching.
3.What abilities and/or qualities make this nominee a candidate for this award?

THE GLADYS DOTY AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROFESSION

Purpose: To honor a member of the profession who has made a significant contribution through research, publication, professional presentations, leadership, public service, or by assuming an active role in educational advocacy.
Who is eligible: Any member of CoTESOL who you consider meets the purpose. (Board members are not eligible.)
Criteria: The material submitted will be examined for evidence of professional contributions in the areas mentioned.
Nomination process: The nominator should click on the nomination form and answer the following questions:
1.Write the nominee’s biographical sketch and professional background.
2.Describe the area of the nominee’s contribution to the profession.
3.What traits or achievements make the nominee successful in his/her field?

THE HOWARD MORARIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To support a deserving student who is pursuing a degree in a teacher education program in the field of ESL or Bilingual Education. The amount awarded is determined by annual interest earned on the scholarship endowment.
Who is eligible: Any student who meets the purpose. (Board members are not eligible.)
Criteria: The student should be enrolled in a teacher education program in the field of ESL or Bilingual Education. The student will receive a scholarship grant of $250 and free convention registration.
Nomination process: The nominator should click on the nomination form and answer the following questions:
1.Write the student’s biographical sketch.
2.What qualities make the nominee deserving of the a scholarship?
3.Include the explanation of the reasons for the application. (Written by the student)

TRAVEL AWARDS

Purpose: To encourage participation in CoTESOL's Fall Convention by members and non-members who live more than 100 miles from the convention site.
Who's eligible: Any interested individuals who will share the information and experiences gained from attending the convention with other ESL or bilingual educators in their area of residence. There will be three awards given. Those awarded will receive $150 for travel expenses and free convention registration.
Criteria: Applicants must live at least 100 miles from the convention site and show the ability and willingness to present their experiences to other ESL and bilingual educators.

CONVENTION REGISTRATION SCHOLARSHIPS

CoTESOL offers five scholarships to members who show a need for support in order to attend the annual Fall Convention.

D. SCOTT ENRIGHT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANT

A $250 D. Scott Enright Professional Development Grant will be awarded to a member of CoTESOL who wishes to pursue further training in ESL/bilingual teaching, counseling, or other related field. This training is not limited to college or university work. The grant can also be used for such educational opportunities as TESOL Summer Institute or for TESOL conferences. The purpose of the grant is to help members improve their ability to teach or counsel second language learners.

BARBARA JUNE SAMPLE PRESIDENT'S AWARD

From time to time, at the discretion of the CoTESOL president, the President's Award is given to a distinguished member of the community for advancing educational opportunity for the people of Colorado.
